Frequently Asked Questions

MEF is MOOC evaluation framework, designed with a strong pedagogical basis underpinned by theory and MOOC design practices, which evaluates the integration of learner-centric pedagogy in MOOCs.

The MOOC evaluation framework distinguishes itself from other MOOC evaluation measures as it primarily focuses on evaluation of learner-centric pedagogy in MOOC design. Also, the framework goes beyond a crisp checklist in the form of questions or high-level guidelines to evaluate a MOOC, and provides comprehensive indicators for MOOC creators or reviewers for pedagogy evaluation. These indicators can also be used for formative purposes during the MOOC design phase to improve.

MEF has primarily been designed for MOOC creators or MOOC reviewers. However, it can also be used by instructional designers, pedagogical facilitators, teaching assistants or moderators attempting to design interactive online courses.

There are no eligibility criteria for using MEF. It is important to involve the respective teams responsible for undertakings such as developing content and learning activities, video creation, assessments, learning resources, discussion forums etc. while evaluating the corresponding dimension.

There is no fee associated with the use of MEF. You are only required to do a free sign up during your first visit to MEF, and then you can use it for all your MOOCs.

MEF that supports a MOOC evaluation process based on 44 criteria segregated into 8 different dimensions. The framework allows evaluation of all pedagogical aspects of the MOOC design; however, it can be employed at both formative and summative level. Either a collective approach can be followed to evaluate the entire MOOC and examine all dimensions at once or selective dimension(s) may be chosen during formative evaluation. Summative evaluation can be performed for an already created MOOC to gain insights on the areas of strength and weakness. While performing a formative evaluation of a MOOC, which is currently under design, it is suggestive to reflect on criteria and guiding indicators provided for each dimension.

Each indicator in MEF is rated on a four-point scale (missing, inadequate, proficient, or distinguished) ranging from 0 to 3, demonstrating the level of performance or achievement. The users will receive an average score for each dimension. Based on these scores, feedback will be received drawn from four score bands as standards for measuring the strength of learner-centric design in a particular dimension. These scoring bands will help you visualize the interpretation of the obtained score.

No, it is not necessary to employ all dimensions in order to get feedback. You may evaluate selective dimension(s) and feedback on those.

Though MEF has been designed primarily for xMOOCs, online/hybrid courses with similar structure may be evaluated for their pedagogy design using MEF.

The motivation to perform this evaluation exercise should be to design a MOOC of high pedagogical quality.

MEF only focuses on the pedagogy aspect of MOOC. In its design, MEF did not take specially-abled learners, digital literacy skills of learners or technological support used by instructors into account.
